This guide will teach you some basic tips about how to play a healer with and against the world! Basically it says everything important you should pay attention to and what to do first and last. Your role as a healer is to keep you and your teammates alive but not only, you have to contribute to and deny pressure (cleanse, buffs, dispell, cc). The purpose here isn't to explain what your own class is able to do because you should know it well already, but more to tell you when to use what, in a very concrete way.
This contains two parts, a priest part and a mystic part + how to play against each other and other classes. To assist your team effectively, it is very recommended that you know every class' basics at least, so you can figure what everyone is planning to do for better teamwork and counterplay (well if you're lazy just read the skills below). Also this wont explain what every healer skill does since you have to know them already, though it will bring some details about them. No glyph setup either.
The first point that is very important and underrated is positioning. Pillars are your best friends, hiding behind a pillar makes a DD's life much harder when they're focusing you. Pillars also protect you from lock-ons like sleeps or mystic's fear. Of course you can't heal or anything through pillars, just stay near them when doing stuff, more importantly when you're being focused.
If you play a priest, it's best to be as far as cleanse's max range from your DDs when you're healing, this will save you from many cc (giga, sorc sleep, sorc silence, magma, warrior cascade, archer aoe stuntrap, archer staggers) and also discourages enemies to focus you since you are out of range.
As mystic, you sometimes need to get closer to regress or cc the enemy healer. You should position depending on the game. When your team has the upper hand on pressure, for example try to stand between your DDs and the enemy healer, reasonably far from the enemy DDs.
If you are not experienced with all classes, here is a summary of the skills you should pay attention to.
SKILLS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT
Lancer
Giga (chained leash)
If you see a DD getting stunned close to an enemy lancer, he will most likely use giga. This is one big reason to stand far away. If you find yourself in this situation close enough for giga to reach you, iframe it or jump if you have your iframe on cd (as priest gs can work but is sometimes too slow) then cleanse after his shield bash (giga itself is uncleanseable). You need to be more than 15 meters away from each of your DDs as it pulls enemies that are within 15m from eachother.
Slayer
Exhaustion bow
This skill looks like their other distant skill but it's purple. 50%+ cd is a lot so make sure to cleanse this when you see it (and you should see).
Backstab
When a slayer uses this on you: if you're a priest, always cleanse facing him so you don't get backcritted and take a lot less damage. Always do it.
If you're a mystic, jaunt away then heal yourself or fairy or mire/fear/stunball. If jaunt is on cd for some reason then try to face him and hope.
Beserker
All of their KDs are a threat
As priest you can deal with them better by spamming cleanse to resist an incoming kd; good zerks will stagger you with auto before they kd so it's faster (you can't dodge the kd after being staggered) and you need to cleanse when they get in range for auto or to get away directly. After you use retaliate don't be afraid to pop kaia if you feel danger. If you see a DD getting kd chained (not using retaliate) remember to use arise. As mystic you have a harder time and you have to use your cc to peel for yourself, especially when retaliate isn't up. Watch for their 5 sec anti stun (tenacity) so you don't waste time, mana and cd (don't ever try to kd them to survive, it's a bad idea).
Also remember about their inescapable, if you get hit by it you can't use backstep or jaunt, as priest you can cleanse or fiery but as mystic you can only heal yourself or cc.
If you see a zerk roll near you get distance and if you can't do that then face them to not get backcritted.
Warrior
Mystics don't have a problem against wars so this is for priests. With a good war on you, it's normal that you will be able to do much less than without him. Keep track of his cds and make use of gs when stuns are up, and if you can't tell just use it when it's up. Kaia will help you a lot as well, the best is to have both at the same time so he can't annoy you at all during that moment. After his backstab combo, use cleanse, then backstep, then heal yourself. Cleansing before backstep will give you more time to heal up than using it after backstep (you have to cleanse to remove the healing debuff).
Archer
Stagger+kick
If you are close to an archer he will probably kick you, opening up many possibilities for him and his mates. So as said earlier stay reasonably far.
Another thing you need to be careful about is an enemy archer kicking one of your DDs because he will most likely put an aoe stuntrap under his feet. It is a very long stun and you must not be in range of it, to be able to cleanse it. There is like 1 sec of delay after the trap is put for it to explode so you can cleanse the kick before the trap gets triggered, if you're fast enough.
Sorcerer
Silence
If you're a priest, you can time cleanse for it to go through the silence.
Gyre
If you're a priest you are able to fiery escape.
If you're a mystic, the logical option is to cleanse because you can't escape it. The problem is that sorcs mostly gyre you to use sleep after, and unless you pre locked cleanse, you wont have time for it. You can either fear the sorc, or stunball at the ground then cleanse but you still have to be very fast and to have planned it. Another option when playing against sorcs that are aware of this efficient sleep method is to drop motes in several spots of the room and camp on them...
Mana volley
Same animation as silence but blue. You should try to dodge it, and cleanse you and your DDs if they get the debuff.
Ice needle+sleep or ice needle+magma+sleep
If you see an ice needle thrown in the air, the sorc will try to land sleep so be prepared. If you see and ice needle + a magma on you, spam your iframe. (if your ping is 100+ ms, you often can't dodge after the magma's stagger so get out of range of magma after the needle)
Priest
Guardian Sanctuary
You can't stun/sleep/slow/fear a priest for 7 sec (soon 10) while he has this buff.
Mystic
Sleep or fear+sleep
When playing against a mystic, hug pillars even more than usually and play around them as much as you can. Mystics will try to sleep you when their DDs have a pressure advantage/are higher on health than yours, expect it and be prepared. When you need to leave your pillar and get in fear range use gs or fairy to protect yourself. Remember that fear has a 1 min cd, so when it's not up you only have to expect the sleep and dodge it.
Mire
You usually don't need to cleanse slows fast, but this is a strong one so do it.
